Grisell Baez musicianship & ELMitos
Grisell is a singer and music teacher born and raised in Puerto Rico. She earned her Bachelors Degree in Vocal Performance at the Puerto Rico Conservatory of Music. Grisell has been teaching vocal technique and elementary music education since 2004. Her love of singing and teaching brought her to California to complete her Master’s Degree in Music Education with an emphasis on Kodaly Method at Holy Names University in Oakland. She has her Orff Schulwerk level II certification.
Amanda Hahn musicianship & Orff
Amanda, a certified Orff-Schulwerk teacher of Music and Movement, has been teaching music for 16 years. She is a director for the Marin Girls Chorus and the music specialist at Montessori de Terra Linda, working with ages 2-12. In her classes, she looks for ways to reach every student through her playful style, enjoying their eagerness to explore music creatively.A native of Wilmington, Delaware, Amanda received a Bachelor of Music in Flute Performance from Boston University and a Master of Music degree from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. She enjoys performing chamber music on flute and singing in local choruses.
Catherine John violin & chamber music
Catherine holds a Master of Arts in Community Music from the Irish Academy of Music and Dance from the University of Limerick, Ireland. She has founded, coordinated, and performed with youth classical music ensembles in California, Spain, France, Mexico, and Ireland. Catherine has a special interest in the traditional music of Mexico and Ireland, and especially Irish/Mexican musical fusion.
Anne Lerner-Wright cello
Anne studied conducting at Northwestern University where she completed her Bachelor of Arts in Music as a cello performance major. Anne has performed with many Bay Area orchestras and is a sought-after chamber musician and performer of contemporary music. Besides performing as a conductor and cellist, Anne also has a passion for singing opera.
Cathy Lenz musicianship & Orff
Cathy has taught classroom music in the San Rafael public schools for over 10 years. Her teaching incorporates instrument playing, vocal technique, movement and the integration of the arts with academic subjects. Cathy has received her Orff Schulwerk certification and sits on the board of the Northern California Chapter of the American Orff Schulwerk Association.
Kim Mai Nguyen, viola, jazz & musicianship
When she was seven, violist, Kim Mai's dream was to become a musician in order to travel and discover the world. Kim Mai believes in music’s power to heal and make a better life for people. Through her involvement in several community programs, Kim Mai has become an enthusiastic advocate of music education.Originally from France, Kim Mai moved to the US after obtaining her undergraduate degree and her graduate Music Diploma at the Conservatoire National de Région de Paris where she studied with Laurent Verney and Tasso Adamopoulos. She obtained her Bachelor of Music degree in 2011 under the guidance of Hsin Yun Huang and Heidi Castleman at Juilliard. This past May 2013, Kim Mai finished her Master of Music program, also at Juilliard.
Nzingah Smith flute, clarinet, jazz & musicianship
Nzingah studied at Boston's Berklee College of Music and Rutgers University. She currently plays with Infinite Kin and B-Free, and is the lead alto-saxophonist in Oakland's Count Basie Tribute Band. She teaches music at the San Francisco School, Head Royce, San Pedro Elementary School, and the Oakland Public Music Conservatory.
Denise Wharmby chorus & musicianship
Denise hails from Australia, where she trained to concert level in piano and classical voice at the Tasmanian Conservatorium of Music. She has composed music for theatre, directed many children's shows, and enjoyed a successful career singing professionally as a leading lady in musical theatre, opera, cabarets and pantomimes in Australia and the UK. Denise emphasizes providing excellence in musical instruction, encouraging each child to develop his or her own unique sound and improve vocal range, using a variety of song styles, fun games, rhythm and movement activities while enjoying the benefits of beautiful choral singing.
Karsten Windt violin
Born in Berlin, Germany, Karsten was first violinist with the Deutsche Symphony Orchestra (DSO) since 1992, performing regularly in the Berlin Philharmonic Hall and touring throughout Europe, Asia, North and South America. He graduated from the Universitaet der Kuenste in Berlin and the Guildhall School of Music & Drama. Karsten believes that the future of classical music lies not only with our young musicians but also with our young audiences.
