New opportunity for ELM students at historic Cazadero music program

ELM has been invited to participate in one of the most long-standing musical traditions that the Bay Area has to offer. Cazadero Performing Arts Camp, a secluded camp and performance space near the Russian River, has been a significant part of the Bay Area music scene since 1957, partnering with the SF Symphony, SF Opera Orchestra, SF Ballet Orchestra, and Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra, among countless other reputable Bay Area music groups and programs. More than 100,000 young musicians have gone to Cazadero to participate in this transformative program, and now it's ELM's turn.

Enriching Lives through Music has been rapidly increasing its reach and capacity, and people are noticing. Cazadero Performing Arts Camp offers a three-day intensive program for exceptional public school music programs called JumpStart in Music, and ELM has the opportunity to take fifty students to Caz for this program at the end of May.

We have invited several guest musicians for workshops and masterclasses. Conductor Juan Felipe Molano is even flying out from Los Angeles for this music weekend with ELM. There will be a faculty recital, a talent show, group hikes among the redwoods, campfire songs, and s'mores, among other nature-oriented, community-building activities. This is the first time ELM has been able to take the students on a musical excursion like this. It will be an incredibly inspiring weekend for the students. We can't wait! Simón Bolívar Symphony Orchestra of Venezuela, UC Berkeley Orchestra and ELM and local el Sistema programs side by side

Cal Performances hosted the first-ever Seminario on the UC Berkeley campus, an immersive musical sharing with young musicians from a half-dozen local El Sistema music programs to rehearse and perform alongside members of the UC Berkeley Symphony Orchestra and the Simón Bolívar Symphony Orchestra of Venezuela. Our musicians played side by side on the Zellerbach Hall stage as peers with the UC Berkeley Symphony Orchestra and Simón Bolívar Symphony Orchestra of Venezuela.

Thirty students participated in our two-week intensive Creative Composing Camp.  They wrote about challenges, obstacles and opportunities and created a 'rock opera' in six movements that described alternative paths one can take in life.  All original lyrics and music. They curated the performance and memorized all the music.  It was a huge success and great accomplishment of which they and their parents were proud.

We are honored that the Lucas Valley Chamber Orchestra (LVCO) has selected ELM as a recipient for their benefit concert April 17th at 7:30 PM at the Christ Presbyterian Church in Terra Linda 620 Del Ganado Road, San Rafael 94903.  Enjoy Beethoven, Mozart and Gershwin's gorgeous Lullaby and support the LVCO and ELM!  Thank you Frank LaHorgue and the LVCO!  And thank you Christ Presbyterian Church for your generous sponsorship of this concert.

Our concert on Saturday, February 7th, with  Juan Felipe Molano, ELM's artistic-director in-residence and currently the conductor of the Youth Orchestra LA, was an incredible success.

With a 57 piece orchestra, composed of our ELM students, our faculty, students from public and private schools, and professional musicians - it was truly a community event.

We are especially proud of our beginning cello students who, after just playing their instruments for a few months - proudly joined the orchestra..

Stay tuned for our next big concert on June 6th and news about our 2015 summer composing camp with Dan Trahey - starting August 2nd.
