ELM Notes March 2019
Dear ELM Supporter:
This year has been one of many firsts for ELM – Our first home and our first van. Each has transformed ELM in more ways than we could have imagined. This, our first newsletter, will take you backstage (as it were), to share the joys of our own space and our own wheels.
Only halfway into our first year at 2955 Kerner, we have filled the space with light, laughter, color, and of course, music. ELM parents have lovingly painted, built storage for our instruments, and repaired electrical and plumbing fixtures.
On Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday afternoons, children’s laughter and beautiful music fills the air until the evening, often extending until well after I leave for the day. My favorite time of the day is 3:35 when the yellow school bus arrives and children toting violins and cellos spill out and file past my window. They wave on their way in, pop into my office for a “hi” or a hug on their way musicianship class or violin or cello lessons.
Exuberant note counting games waft from the multi-purpose room; warm-up scales drift from the cello room, and snippets of melody escape from the violin room bring joy to my heart before I regretfully, close my door to make a call or follow-up with a donor. When I leave for the day, I poke my head into one of the classrooms to see children focused, attentive, and connected to themselves, their peers and the music. It is truly a joy!
ELM inspires youth to envision and achieve excellence in all facets of their lives through music education and performance.
ELM provides group and individual music education for youth in San Rafael's Canal neighborhood. All students start on the soprano recorder, chorus, and Orff mallet instruments through which they learn ear training, music theory, and music-reading skills. After students demonstrate basic music competence and commitment, they are offered opportunities to transition to other instruments. Students have multiple ensemble and performance opportunities. Family participation and community partnerships are key to ELM's success.
ELM envisions a center of musical excellence in which classical music and other music traditions are shared and celebrated.
